Though there isn't a white color dye, you can alter the color of clothes to make them appear white. It's also super easy to do! Use a mixture of hot water and color remover to strip out the existing dye in the fabric to change your clothes to appear more white. You can also use a chlorine bleach solution to bleach your fabric white. It may be not be possible to turn some fabrics completely white, but you can remove enough of the original color to make them appear white.

  1. 1

Fill a large container with 4 gallons (15 L) of hot water. Turn on a faucet and allow it to reach the hottest temperature and fill a container with the hot water. Or fill a large pot with 4 gallons (15 L) of water and set the stove to high heat. When the water starts to boil, turn off the heat and wait 5 minutes to allow the water to cool down.[1]

    • Make sure the water isn't so hot that it will burn you before you start working!
  2. 2

Add 1 ounce (28 g) of powdered color remover to the water. Many powdered color removers come in individual packets that are measured out for you to use. Add 1 packet of the color remover to the hot water and give it a good stir. If the color remover doesn't come in individual packets, measure out 1 ounce (28 g) of the powder, add it to the water, and stir it to combine them mixture.[2]

    • Powdered color remover is also known as color run remover.
    • You can find powdered color remover at department stores and online.
    • Popular color removers include Rit Color Remover and Carbona Color Run Remover.

Submerge the clothes into the mixture. Place the clothes you want to turn white into the hot water and use a wooden spoon or another utensil to submerge them so they're fully saturated in the water. Swish the clothes around in the mixture so every part of it is evenly soaked.[3]

    • Move the clothes back and forth with your spoon or utensil so the fabric soaks in as much of the color remover as possible.
  4. 4

Allow the fabric to soak for 30 minutes. Leave the clothes undisturbed so the color remover can work its magic and start to release the dye in the fabric. Avoid moving, stirring, or touching the clothes for at least 30 minutes.[4]

    • Set a timer on your watch, phone, or stove.
  5. 5

Remove the clothes when all of the color is gone. After 30 minutes, use your spoon or utensil to lift the clothes out of the water. If they still have a lot of dye on them, submerge them back into the water. Wait another 10 minutes and then check them again. Keep the clothes in the solution until they turn as white as you want them to be.[5]

    • After about 2 hours, the color remover will have lifted as much of the dye is it possibly can, so you can remove the clothes from the solution at that point.

Tip: If the clothes still have a little bit of their original color, or if they appear splotchy, repeat the process to remove all of the color. Fill a container with hot water, add more powdered color remover, and soak the clothes in them.

  6. 6

Wash and dry the clothes by themselves to flush out the color remover. Place the wet clothes into your washing machine and wash them as you normally would, but do not put any other clothes in the machine with them. When they're finished, put them into your dryer and dry them on a standard-setting.[6]

    • You can wear the clothes after you dry them.
    • The washer and dryer will have neutralized the color remover, so you can wash the clothes with your other clothes in future washes.

Combine 1 part chlorine bleach with 4 parts water. Turn on a faucet and plug the drain to allow it to fill with water, or fill a bucket or container with water. Remove the cap from the container of bleach and slowly pour it into a measuring cup. Then, gently pour the bleach into the hot water so it doesn't splash and stir it to combine the solution.[7]

    • For example, for 4 cups (950 mL) of water, you need to add 1 cup (240 mL) of chlorine bleach.
    • Use chlorine bleach to turn your clothes white rather than all-purpose or color-safe bleach, which may not bleach your clothes evenly.
    • You can find chlorine bleach at your local department store.

Warning: Chlorine bleach puts off toxic fumes that are dangerous to breathe in. Work in a well-ventilated area and wear a face mask if necessary to avoid exposure.

  2. 2

Place the clothes in the mixture and stir them around. Put your clothes into the bleach solution and use a wooden spoon or another utensil to push them under the surface so they're fully submerged. Stir the clothes around in the solution so they're evenly saturated and the bleach is soaked into all of the fibers.[8]

    • Stir the clothes gently so the solution doesn't splash.
    • If you do get some of the bleach solution on your skin, wash it off under cool water immediately.
  3. 3

Let the clothes soak for 10 minutes then check to see if they're white. Leave the clothes undisturbed so the bleach can start to turn them white. After about 10 minutes, use your utensil to lift up some of the clothes so you can inspect them. If they're still not white, submerge the clothes back into the solution and wait another 5 minutes before you check them.[9]

    • Check the clothes every 5 minutes until they're the desired color.
  4. 4

Run the clothes under cold water to deactivate the bleach. Place the clothes into a clean sink or bucket and run them under cold water. The water will deactivate and rinse out the bleach from the fibers so the clothes are safe to wear.[10]

    • The deactivated bleach also won't stain any other clothes it comes into contact with.
